A: The cause of the Applegate fire, which burned 459 acres and destroyed six homes and four outbuildings in October, has not been determined.
“Our investigators are still actively working on this case,” said Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
The fire began in the afternoon of Oct. 8 with approximately five fires reported along Interstate 80 near Applegate in Placer County. It spread to into hilly woodlands and burned for more than a week, forcing evacuations in the communities of Applegate, Heather Glen, Weimar and Twin Peaks.
The fire at one point threatened 400 homes.
