Sacramento police are investigating a kidnapping attempt Wednesday morning of a 13-year-old girl in East Sacramento.

The teenager, who was not identified, was walking near 45th and M streets on her way to Kit Carson Middle School around 7:21 a.m. when she was approached by a dark-colored sedan, police said. A man exited the vehicle and tried to coerce her into the car.

“He was reportedly armed with a firearm,” said Officer Matthew McPhail, a spokesman for the Police Department. “He had grabbed her clothing in an attempt to get her into the car.”

The girl resisted and yelled for help, attracting the attention of a passer-by. The vehicle fled the scene, McPhail said. There were at least two people in the car, including the driver.

Police have released a sketch of a suspect.

One man in the car is described as a mixed race male of light complexion, in his 20s, with acne scars on his face and a faint mustache. He is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a dark gray beanie and a burgundy hooded sweatshirt.

Officers are looking for surveillance footage that would have captured the incident. The girl was not injured.

Witnesses are asked to contact the dispatch center at 916-264-5471 or Crime Alert at 916-443-4357. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
