Exterior fire that spread to attic damages Citrus Heights home

A fire that started outside, then spread to the attic caused an estimated $40,000 damage to a Citrus Heights home Thursday afternoon.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched shortly after noon to the 6800 block of Westchester Way regarding a report of flames coming from a house. Firefighters en route reported seeing a column of smoke.

When they arrived at the scene, crews found an exterior fire that extended into the attic of the home. They quickly knocked down the fire and were able to use salvage covers to protect the resident’s antiques from damage, according to a Fire District news release.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Officials said the cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators have not ruled out improperly discarded smoking material.
