An Auburn man has been arrested, accused of felony hit and run in the death of 30-year-old Samuel Melgoza near Rio Linda.
Thomas Dawson, 51, was arrested about 7:45 a.m. Monday at his home, the California Highway Patrol reported. Investigators determined that Dawson was behind the wheel of the late-1990s Ford Ranger pickup truck that struck Melgoza as he was walking near Elkhorn Boulevard and 20th Street in the early morning hours of Dec. 14. Melgoza died at the scene.
The North Sacramento Area CHP’s special investigation unit received several tips from the public in the weeks following the incident. Information obtained from the tips led investigating officers to the location of the Ford Ranger, according to a CHP news release.
Dawson was booked into Sacramento County jail on suspicion of felony hit and run, felony voluntary vehicular manslaughter and misdemeanor destruction of evidence.
