A fire in Elverta caused heavy damage Tuesday morning to a vacant house and also injured a firefighter.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were called to the blaze in a single-story home in the 2300 block of Missouri Way about 4 a.m. Tuesday. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof.
At one point, crews had to refrain from fighting fire from within the structure when a roof-top air conditioner looked perilously close to falling into the dwelling. After a while, firefighters resumed an attempt to quell the blaze in rooms not directly under the unit and from the exterior.
A firefighter was hurt putting out the blaze, although the extent of his injury was not known. The house sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage.
