All but one traffic lane on westbound Madison Avenue near Date Avenue and Interstate 80 in the Foothill Farms area have been closed as Pacific Gas and Electric Co. crews work to repair a gas leak.
PG&E notified the Sacramento County Department of Transportation about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday that a gas leak had been detected near the intersection of Madison and Date avenues. Crews began checking the area and determined immediate repairs were needed, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
Brandi Ehlers, a spokeswoman for PG&E, said repairs to the gas line, which is in the slow lane of Madison Avenue, are expected to be completed by 6 p.m. Lanes likely will remain closed until midnight for cleanup and restoration work.
Motorists are advised to avoid westbound Madison Avenue between Auburn Boulevard and I-80 to avoid delays and heavy traffic congestion.
