Two men convicted of the 2014 slaying of 34-year-old Justin David Gonzales at a Carmichael apartment have been sentenced to 26 years to life in prison.
Christopher Bernal, 35, and Jacob Fisher, 22, were convicted of first-degree murder by a Sacramento County jury in June 2015. The jury also found that the defendants were armed with a firearm during commission of the crime, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release. The two men were sentenced Friday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Greta Curtis Fall.
On Jan. 18, 2014, Bernal and Fisher went to the Sienna Square Apartments in the 4700 block of Marconi Avenue. Finding Gonzales in the apartment courtyard, they beat him to the ground and shot him in the back of the neck, authorities said. The defendants reportedly had prior conflicts with Gonzales.
