Ducklings waddle to safety with assist from Sac Metro Fire

A dozen ducklings got a helping hand to the water and away from traffic last week from Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters.

A mother mallard and her little ones somehow found themselves on Sunrise Boulevard near Winding Way. A Sac Metro fire inspector driving by Thursday morning noticed the fledglings and mama.

The fire inspector got out to herd them off the road. Feeling they were still in danger from traffic, the inspector called the nearest fire station.

Engine 31 responded to the scene and took them all, including mom, in a cardboard box to the north side of the American River – all the while staying in service and responsive to 911 calls.
