A 29-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, accused of kidnapping two children who had been left in a vehicle for a few moments while their mother was in a store.
Sacramento police responded at 12:36 p.m. to the 5500 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just north of Fruitridge Road. A woman had pulled into the parking lot of a business and left the vehicle running and the air conditioner on. Her children, ages 5 and 6, remained in the vehicle while their mother went into the store.
When the woman returned, a man was in the driver’s seat, according to a Police Department news release. The man drove off in the woman’s vehicle with the two children in the car. A witness followed the man as he headed north on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The man stopped the vehicle at 23rd Avenue and left on foot.
Sacramento police and probation officers detained 29-year-old Shaun Masse. Police said they do not believe Masse and the victim knew each other, but Masse is known in the area.
