The 2-year-old boy who died Sunday after being struck by a delivery truck in the parking lot of a South Sacramento apartment complex was chasing a ball when he was hit, authorities said.

Sacramento County coroner’s officials identified the child as Royal Mitchell.

No arrests have been made in connection with the 3 p.m. fatal incident just off Summersdale Drive at Aspen Park Apartments, a large complex along Mack Road. Police said the driver of the truck that hit the toddler was not speeding or driving impaired, and he cooperated with investigators.

The child was pronounced dead at a hospital about a half-hour after the crash.

Based on witness statements and evidence, police say that as the delivery truck came into the complex and turned between parked cars, Royal left the sidewalk where he was playing with other children in pursuit of a loose ball.

The driver stopped immediately.

Neighbors expressed sadness about the death of the toddler Monday. Attempts to speak with the child’s family were not successful.
