The sheriff’s-coroner office will lead an investigation into the exact cause of her death.
Afeni Shakur Davis told the Associated Press in 2005 that she kicked a cocaine habit, and by the time Tupac was killed in 1996 at the height of his fame, they had grown closer.
As she bounced from New York City to Baltimore to California, falling deeper into drugs and joining the Black Panther movement, she enrolled her young son in several arts schools and programs, where he honed musical and acting abilities.
He would go on to become a hip hop icon before being gunned down in Las Vegas.
