South Sacramento couple convicted in death of infant son

A south Sacramento couple have been convicted of second-degree murder in the 2014 death of their 3-month-old son.

A jury on Monday also found Terry Scott, 21, and Ashleigh Smith, 29, guilty of assault on a child causing death, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release.

On July 24, 2014, the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a call for aid in the 2900 block of North Meadows Drive in south Sacramento. They found Scott and Smith’s son, Tyrese, in critical condition and took him to an area hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the UC Davis Medical Center, where he died two days later.

Prosecutors said Scott and Smith had chronically abused the child since his birth on April 26, 2014. They said the infant had multiple brain traumas, 10 broken ribs in various stages of healing, eyeball hemorrhages and a hemorrhaged testicle.

Scott and Smith are to be sentenced June 10 by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Kevin McCormick.
