Sacramento police provide details of a shooting incident that wounded an 18-year-old student at a nearby vocational school he crossed Fruitridge Road near Power Inn Road on Thursday, May 12, 2016.

A drive-by shooting Thursday afternoon on Fruitridge Road near Power Inn Road injured a Sacramento Academic and Vocational Academy student.

The shooting occurred about 1 p.m. in the 8000 block of Fruitridge Road. Police said initial reports that the shooting occurred at a bus stop or the vocational school were incorrect.

Sacramento police spokesman Sgt. Bryce Heinlein said the victim, an 18-year-old male, was walking northbound across Fruitridge Road, just west of Power Inn Road.

He was not in a crosswalk and was walking through traffic when a vehicle drove by and shots were fired. The victim suffered gunshot wounds and walked north to the vocational academy at at 5330 Power Inn Road.

Heinlein said the victim was taken to an area hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police were searching for the vehicle involved in the shooting, which was described as a dark-colored sedan. Heinlein said no one has been detained.

Due to the seriousness of the victim’s injuries, homicide and crime scene investigators were called to the scene, Heinlein said.

Gateway Community Charters confirmed one of its students had been shot off campus. The school said the student’s parents were notified.

“We encourage anyone with information about this event to notify law enforcement. Counselors will be on site to support students and families,” the school said.
