Coroner identifies Sacramento shooting victim

Coroner’s deputies have identified the young man shot to death in Sacramento on Monday night.

The coroner’s office website lists him as Ceron D. Whatley, 21, of Sacramento.

Sacramento police responded around 6:30 p.m. Monday to Northfield Drive and Northview Drive, not far from Northgate Boulevard and Arden Way after citizens reported the sound of gunfire and a man injured.

When police arrived they found a wounded man who would survive his injury. He was transported to the hospital.

Officers continued to search the area, coming upon the seriously injured Whatley, according to a police press release. He was also rushed to the hospital by Sacramento Fire Department medical personnel but was pronounced dead at 7:21 p.m.

Police have not released a motive in the shooting. A police press release only said that an “altercation involving multiple subjects occurred just prior” to the gunfire.
