A Citrus Heights police officer shot and killed a man wielding a knife late Thursday.
The man, who has not been identified, died at the scene of a long standoff with officers that began about 4 p.m. Thursday at apartments in the 6000 block of Birdcage Street. When officers first arrived at the scene, they found a bloodied woman.
She was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and officers began attempting to contact the man they suspected of wounding the woman. Her condition was not available Friday.
The man retreated into his residence and would not come out. He was alone in the home, officers said.

For hours, officers tried to peacefully resolve the situation. About 8:20 p.m., when officers approached the doorway to speak with the man, officers believe they heard gunshots from inside the apartment.
Adjoining apartments and nearby businesses were evacuated. Citrus Heights SWAT officers were summoned.
At a little after 10 p.m., the man left his apartment without warning. He threatened an officer with a knife while both were in a narrow corridor – the threat occurring close to officers, according to a police press release.
An officer then shot the man. Medical personnel standing by responded and provided medical aid to no avail.
