Suspicious package in Citrus Heights deemed not a destructive device
Citrus Heights police report that a suspicious package placed at a fire station Wednesday afternoon on Greenback Lane was detonated by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Explosives Ordnance Detail. The package was described as an oxygen bottle and a backpack with what appeared to be wires and other packages, according to a police department news release.
At 3:04 p.m., police received a call from the Station 21 of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District at 7641 Greenback Lane that a man, who was behaving oddly, set down the package carefully and ran away. During the investigation, Greenback Lane from San Juan Avenue to Sunrise Boulevard was closed. Police said the man, wearing a long-sleeve red shirt and a dark hat over a beanie, was later found and detained by police in the area near Sunrise Boulevard and Greenback Lane.
After EOD team members detonated the device, they concluded that the package was not a destructive or an explosive device. All roadways reopened just before 5 p.m. and the man was later released without charge, according to the police.
