Mokelumne River drowning victim was Pittsburg youth

The Pittsburg Police Department has confirmed one of the names of two teens who drowned in the Mokelumne River on Saturday afternoon.

Zuleica Ruiz, a senior at Pittsburg High School, drowned in the incident, according to a tweet by the department. Authorities have not identified the second victim, a male.

According to the department, Ruiz, 19, took part in its Police Explorer program. She also was a Foot Pursuit Running and Fitness Club member.

It is unclear whom the victims were visiting in the area when the incident occurred. The Amador County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 2:30 p.m. reporting that the pair had fallen into the Mokelumne River near the Moore Creek Campground and had never returned.

Amador County Undersheriff Jim Wegner said the office notified Pacific Gas and Electric Co., and the company lowered the river’s flows to aid search efforts. Wegner said neither victim was wearing a flotation device.
