Crime Q&A: Was anyone arrested for ’96 shooting death at North Highlands motel?

Q: Was there ever an arrest in the shooting death of Jeff Kruger at the Days Inn off of Watt Avenue and I-80?

Bonnie, Carmichael

A: No arrests have been reported in the October 1996 death of 40-year-old Jeffery Kruger in a North Highlands motel room.

According to a story in The Sacramento Bee, guests at the Rodeway Inn on Orange Grove Avenue, off Watt Avenue, heard a struggle about 11 p.m. and notified security. Kruger, a Rio Linda resident, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said at the time that Kruger likely knew his killer.

No gun was found, but deputies discovered nails placed behind the tires of Kruger’s vehicle. Detectives also were seeking information about a man and woman who witnesses said left in different cars.
