A 19-year-old south Sacramento man died Saturday of a gunshot wound to the chest from a shooting earlier in the week.

Sacramento Sheriff’s officials said Deston Garrett, 19, had been shot Thursday a little before 9 p.m. at his residence on the 3900 block of 45th Street. Garrett was transported that night to a local hospital by private vehicle, officials said. He died at the hospital at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Derrell Roberts of the Roberts Family Development Center posted on Facebook that about 100 people gathered outside the University of California Davis Medical Center on Saturday afternoon to grieve after hearing of Garrett’s death.

Roberts and other friends wrote that Garrett attended Sacramento High School, played football and was set to graduate on Monday.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives have taken over the investigation, according to a press statement. The agency is asking anyone with tips to contact the department at 916-874-5115 or call Crime Alert at 916-443-HELP.
