A man who was reportedly pushing a bicycle along railroad tracks in Elk Grove died Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a Union Pacific train.
The collision occurred shortly after 4 p.m. in the 8900 block of Elk Grove-Florin Road, between Sheldon and Bond roads. An older man was pushing a bicycle northbound on or near the Union Pacific railroad tracks as a northbound train approached from behind him, said Officer Christopher Trim, Elk Grove police spokesman.
He said the train crew sounded the train’s horn in an attempt to warn the man away from the tracks, but he did not respond and was struck by the train. Police and the Cosumnes Fire Department responded, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Trim said. His name has not been released pending notification of family.
Although railroad traffic has been halted in the area to allow investigation of the accident, Trim said streets in the area remain open to traffic.
