Crime Q&A: Has suspect been tried in 2013 slaying of Rancho Cordova couple?
Q: What is the status of the person arrested in the Mel Bain and wife killings?
Robert, El Dorado Hills
A: Shauna Burton is awaiting trial on charges of murder and robbery in the November 2013 deaths of Melvin and Jean Bain.
Burton’s trial date has been reset several times. Her next court date is Sept. 23, for a trial readiness conference, with the trial scheduled for Sept. 29, according to Sacramento Superior Court records available online.
Burton, 38, was arrested Nov. 4, 2013, on suspicion of murdering Melvin Bain, 78, and brutally beating his wife, Jean, 78, in their Rancho Cordova mobile home the previous day. Jean Bain died several days later.
Detectives have said that Burton was acquainted with the Bains and that Melvin Bain occasionally gave her money.
The attack on the Bains was part of a series of crimes that began early Nov. 3. Investigators allege that sometime before 7 a.m., Burton stole a maroon Cadillac Eldorado from a neighbor on Aries Way and drove to a CVS pharmacy on Zinfandel Drive about 7:12 a.m., where she claimed to have a gun and demanded cash. The Cadillac was found abandoned about 9:30 p.m., but sheriff’s officials said detectives believe Burton used the car to visit the Bains’ home after the robbery at the pharmacy.
