A marijuana growing operation was allegedly discovered upstairs in this Elk Grove home that caught on fire.

Elk Grove police are speaking to four residents of an Elk Grove home where firefighters early Thursday morning say they discovered a marijuana grow when a fire broke out at the two-story residence.

When Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department firefighters arrived at the home in the 6700 block of Springridge Way about 12:15 a.m. Thursday, the fire could be seen coming from the structure.

Crews went into the home to fight the fire moments after arrival. Residents of the home a few moments later told firefighters that everyone had gotten out.

At 12:25 a.m. the department tweeted that the fire had been knocked down. And around 12:35 a.m. it was reported that firefighters had found marijuana growing upstairs in the home.

The investigation related to the suspected marijuana grow was turned over to Elk Grove police. Officer Christopher Trim said that detectives from the Street Crimes Unit were at the home and were in the process of obtaining a search warrant.

Cosumnes fire officials have determined that the cause of the fire was traced to an electrical problem related to the marijuana grow.
