Crime Q&A: Any arrests in 1982 slaying of Sacramento bail bondsman?

Q: There was a killing in Lemon Hill in the early 1980s of a bail bondsman named Leo. Was there resolution to the case?

Mike, Sacramento

A: No arrests have been reported in the slaying of Sacramento bail bondsman Leo Nordeste.

According to a story in The Sacramento Bee, Nordeste’s sister found his body in the living room of his El Paraiso Avenue home on Aug. 23, 1982. Sheriff’s deputies said he had a single bullet wound in the back of his head.

At the time of his death, sheriff’s investigators speculated there could have been some connection between Nordeste’s killing and a shootout at his home two months earlier that ended with the death of 31-year-old Keith Silva, a Yolo County resident.

Nordeste and Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang member Rick Menard were arrested for the killing, but the charges were dropped by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.
