A captain with the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of receiving child pornography.
Mark Wygant was arrested Thursday and has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending results of a federal criminal investigation, according to a news release from the city of South Lake Tahoe. City officials did not disclose the nature of the alleged crime and referred inquiries to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento.
Lauren Horwood, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said the charge was made in a criminal complaint and Wygant appeared in federal court Friday. She said he was in custody and would be booked into the Sacramento County Jail, charged with receiving child pornography.
Wygant’s arrest came after city officials received an internal tip of a potential crime regarding a city employee, and an investigation was launched by federal and local law enforcement agencies, according to the city news release.

“I want to commend the fire chief, police chief, investigative team and the South Lake Tahoe office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their cooperation and professionalism in this matter,” City Manager Nancy Kerry said in a written statement. “The type of conduct as alleged in the FBI’s affidavit is unacceptable for any public employee; it will not be tolerated and will be aggressively investigated.”
