Q: What happened approximately 20 years ago to a young woman who went for a walk on the American River bike trail? I believe she was from the Rancho Corodva area and she went for this walk over the Christmas holiday season. Was she ever found?
A: You may be thinking of the case of a Gold River woman who was jogging along the American River Parkway bike trail in December 1997 when she was accosted by a man with a knife.
The incident occurred near the El Manto Drive access to the bike trail. According to a story in The Sacramento Bee, a man, who was believed to be homeless, grabbed the woman and held a kitchen knife to her throat as he dragged her off the trail toward a secluded area.
Sheriff’s officials said the woman distracted her attacker and grabbed the knife with one hand and his testicles with the other. She then recovered the knife and backed away from the man.
The woman, whose hand was badly cut, was aided by a passing bicyclist. Her attacker escaped into the surrounding brush.
