Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives recently recovered a collection of World War II memorabilia stolen in the burglary of a north Sacramento County residence in June.

The stolen property was uncovered during a probation search of three people who were later arrested for possession of the items, according to a Sheriff’ Department news release. Detective Jon Eubanks of the department’s Property Crimes Bureau was able to link the recovered property to the 2014 burglary.

He contacted the victims, who explained that the items belonged to a United States veteran of World War II and included his personal memorabilia, such as medals, photographs and a personal diary that noted the date in 1944 when he was shot down and captured, becoming a prisoner of war.

Sheriff’s officials said the family of the veteran, who has died, expressed gratitude for return of the items.
