Q: Daniel Caldwell was arrested in February 2009 at his place of business, Big D’s BBQ, near Grant High School on Grand Avenue. He was allegedly involved with several under-14-year-old girls. Any information on his trial date and where he is now?

A: Daniel E. Caldwell, 53, is in Sacramento County Jail awaiting trial on eight counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child younger than 14.

According to Sacramento Superior Court online records, at a hearing on Jan. 15, he was found competent to stand trial and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for for Feb. 20. His bail is set at $1.4 million.

The Sacramento Bee reported that Caldwell was arrested in February 2009 on suspicion of inappropriate sexual behavior with at least eight different young girls. Police said at the time of his arrest that Caldwell was accused of sexually assaulting or inappropriately touching the girls, ages 7 through 17, while camping, as they slept over at his house or while employed at his business, Big D’s BBQ, on Grand Avenue. The victims were girls who trusted Caldwell, and included employees, family members and acquaintances, according to police.

The incidents allegedly occurred between 2000 and 2008.
