Elk Grove High School team wins Sacramento County mock trial contest

Elk Grove High School’s “Blue Team” won the 2015 Gordon D. Schaber Sacramento County mock trial competition this week after several days of fierce courtroom battles.

Twenty teams from 17 high schools in Sacramento, El Dorado and Yolo counties participated in the contest, which took place from Feb. 12 to March 2.

The Sacramento County winners were announced Tuesday during an awards ceremony:

▪  First: Elk Grove High School “Blue Team”

▪  Second: Rio Americano High School

▪  Third: Kaleo Home School

▪  Fourth: Sacramento Country Day School

▪  Fifth: Sheldon High School

▪  Sixth: St. Francis High School

▪  Seventh: Elk Grove High School “Gold Team”

The El Dorado and Yolo county schools were scored separately. Ponderosa High School won the El Dorado County contest, while River City High School won among Yolo County schools.

During the competition, students took on the roles of attorneys, witnesses, jurors, bailiffs and court clerks before a presiding judge and two scoring judges, according to the Sacramento County Office of Education, which coordinates the event. The judges are volunteers from local law firms and legal organizations.

The winning Elk Grove High team will advance to the California mock trial competition in Riverside on March 20-22.
