Sacramento school district, teachers union to make joint announcement with mayor
The Sacramento City Unified School District will make a 1 p.m. announcement with the teachers union and Mayor Darrell Steinberg, according to the mayor’s office.
The Sacramento City Teachers Association has threatened to strike Wednesday absent a deal with the school district. Both sides had been scheduled to meet with a new mediator earlier this morning.
The announcement will take place at City Hall.
The last city district strike occurred in 1989. Teachers are seeking an array of changes that include higher pay increases, smaller class sizes, more arts and music teachers and better working conditions. District leaders say the requests would cost too much money – $65 million more over three years than they are willing to spend.
