Sacramento’s West Campus High School is the 83rd best public high school in California and the 426th in the nation in rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

The magazine released its annual list on Tuesday that ranks nearly 20,000 public high schools.

The first two steps in calculating the rankings made sure the schools serve all of their students well, using their performance on the math and reading portions of their state proficiency tests.

For those schools that made it past the first two steps, a third step assessed the degree to which high schools get students ready for college-level work, according to the magazine.

West Campus High School, 5022 58th St., is in the Sacramento City Unified School District. The 870 students at the college preparatory school are culturally and economically diverse, according to the school website.

Other Sacramento area schools ranking high on the state list:

89: Granite Bay High

100: Davis Senior High

110: Rocklin High School

148: Elk Grove High School

179: Woodcreek High School, Roseville

184: Folsom High School

187: Vista Del Lago, Folsom

201: Oak Ridge High School, El Dorado Hills

207: Mira Loma High School
