UC Davis student apartment expansion will house 3,300 undergrads, university announces

UC Davis is about to start construction on a major student housing project that will make room for more than 3,000 residents.

Expansion of the West Village apartment complex will begin before the winter holiday, the university announced this week in a news release. UC Davis officially switches to its winter schedule next Wednesday.

The project was made possible by a bond sale that closed Thursday, which will finance the $575 million development. UC Davis says in its news release that this makes it the “largest-ever bond issue for a single project in the country.”

The first 1,000 beds are planned to be ready by fall 2020, with 2,300 more planned for the following fall, the news release says.

The existing West Village apartments, opened in phases between 2011 and 2013, currently hold about 2,250 students, according to the news release. They are intended mainly for transfer students and other non-freshman undergraduates.

The expansion will add nine four-story apartment buildings, as well as a 10,000-square-foot community building with a fitness center and other amenities.

“Increasing our on-campus housing inventory for our students has been a goal for us for many years. Moving this project into construction is an important step forward,” Emily Galindo, interim vice chancellor for student affairs, said in a statement.

Construction and operation of the complex will be a public-private partnership between the university and Collegiate Housing Foundation, a nonprofit, according to the announcement.

A formal groundbreaking ceremony will happen in early 2019.

The West Village expansion is part of the university’s long range development plan, which has set a goal of adding 9,050 beds on campus.

West Village is west of the UC Davis main campus, on the other side of Highway 113. The apartment complex is across the street from Sacramento City College’s satellite campus in Davis.
