Arden Middle School cancels classes, still without power after driver hit SMUD pole
San Juan Unified School District announced Arden Middle School will be closed Monday due to an extended power outage caused by a Sunday night traffic collision.
In a message sent at 7:10 a.m., Arden Middle School advised it would not hold classes because a damaged SMUD pole was continuing to cause “a lack of power and heat on campus” early Monday morning. Sacramento was 41 degrees as of 8 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
A suspected DUI driver crashed a red Chevrolet Corvette into the SMUD power pole on Arden Way near Watt Avenue shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the California Highway Patrol’s incident log. The driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested, according to the CHP.
About 10,000 customers in the Arden Arcade area lost power Sunday night, SMUD said. CHP North Sacramento spokesman Officer Greg Zumstein said westbound Arden Way is expected to remain closed at Watt Avenue until about 11 a.m., with eastbound lanes planned to reopen around 2 p.m.
By 8 a.m. Monday, SMUD’s online outage page showed power had been restored to all but 55 homes or businesses, apparently including the middle school.
Classes at Arden Middle School are expected to resume normally on Tuesday, according to the school’s website.
