Top college rankings are out. See where UC Davis and Sacramento State stand

UC Davis ranks among America’s top universities and Sacramento State is a high-performer among publicly funded colleges in the West, according U.S. News & World Report’s annual

UC Davis ranked number 10 in the nation for top public schools, and also ranked high in several other categories. U.S. News placed UC Davis as the 38th best university in the country, tied with University of Texas at Austin.

Sacramento State scored high among public universities with doctorate programs. It also ranked No. 5 for best undergraduate teaching.

Six campuses from the University of California system ranked above UC Davis as top public schools, including UC San Diego and UC Irvine at No. 8, UC Santa Barbara at No. 7, and UC Berkeley and UCLA tying for No. 1.

Schools are ranked “according to their performance across widely accepted indicators of excellence,” according to the report. The report largely factors in average 6-year graduation rates and student retention. It also considers faculty resources, class sizes, SAT and ACT test scores, among other factors.

UC Davis also ranked in the following categories:

  • No. 38 for national universities
  • No. 18 for best colleges for veterans
  • No. 217 for best value schools
  • No. 27 for top performers on social mobility
  • No. 30 for best undergraduate engineering Programs at schools whose highest degree is a doctorate
  • No. 1 for biological and agricultural programs in the engineering department.

UC Davis serves more than 31,000 undergraduates. It also offers highly ranked professional programs including a graduate school of management, school of law, school of medicine, school of education and a school of veterinary medicine. The university has an acceptance rate of 49%, according to U.S. News.

Its in-state tuition and fees are about $14,500, and out-of-state tuition and fees are $45,000.

The national average cost of in-state tuition for colleges and universities $11,286, and $27,394 for out-of-state tuition.

Sacramento State

CSU Sacramento ranked No. 5 for Best Undergraduate Teaching, identifying it as a school that emphasized high quality instruction.

Top college administrators ranked this category by focusing on schools “whose faculty and administrators are committed to teaching undergraduate students in a high-quality manner.” College presidents, provosts and admissions deans were asked to nominate up to 15 schools

CSU Sacramento also ranked in the following categories:

  • No. 38 for regional universities west, a category that assesses schools with limited doctorate programs
  • No. 16 for best college for veterans
  • No. 14 for top performers on social mobility
  • No. 16 for top public schools in the West where a doctorate is not offered
  • No. 153 for nursing
  • No. 35 for best undergraduate engineering programs where a doctorate is not offered
  • The social mobility ranking credits schools for enrolling a high percent of Pell Grant students who graduate at high rates similar to students who did not receive Pell Grants, according to the U.S. News methodology.

    Students at CSU Sacramento can choose from 60 undergraduate degrees and more than 40 master’s programs. In-state tuition and fees are about $7,800, and out-of-state tuition and fees are nearly $17,000. The campus serves nearly 29,000 undergraduate students. The university has an acceptance rate of 94%, according to U.S. News.
