Sutter schools official running for Yuba College trustee seat killed in head-on crash

Roadway fatality

A vigil is planned Thursday for longtime Sutter County schools official and Yuba College trustees’ candidate Eric Pomeroy, who was killed in a head-on collision last weekend.

Pomeroy was headed to a swim meet in Roseville with his daughter, Erica, 15, when their vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer, family members said in a social media post. Pomeroy founded and coached Yuba City-based Sutter Buttes Swimming and his eldest daughter Erica swims for the club.

Erica survived the crash and was taken to an area hospital.

Pomeroy, a Sutter County assistant superintendent for adult and career education, and lifelong resident of the Yuba-Sutter area, was running for a Yuba Community College District trustees’ seat against Rita Andrews in the November election.

Sutter County Superintendent of Schools officials in a social media post remembered Pomeroy as a “man of strong character and integrity. He had a passion for doing what’s best for students and he adored his family.”

A vigil will be held 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Gauche Aquatic Park, 421 Center St., in Yuba City, the Appeal Democrat newspaper reported.

In an interview earlier this year with the Marysville newspaper, Pomeroy, a former high school swimmer, said he founded the swim team after the former Feather River Aquatic Club folded. The new club was founded in August 2021.

“That’s what really got me into swimming full force,” Pomeroy told the Appeal Democrat in February. “Watching my kids and getting involved, just like the dad that’s the soccer coach.”
