A teacher used a racial slur in a classroom, according to San Juan High School officials, triggering an investigation and outreach to students and staff.

Principal David Levis informed families of the March 2 incident, but did not elaborate.

Levis said that any racial slur in any context is “unacceptable.”

School officials said any actions addressing the incident will remain confidential as they are personnel matters, but assured families that a school and district investigation is underway.

“San Juan is a place where all are free to learn in a safe and welcoming environment,” Levis said in a statement. “As a school community, we stand for respecting all races and ethnicities. Any action or language in opposition to this stance is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Counselors and support staff are available to students, the statement said.

“We will also engage in listening sessions with students and staff over the course of the coming weeks to fully support and listen to our community,” Levis said.

San Juan High School, located in Citrus Heights, is one of nine comprehensive high schools in the San Juan Unified School District, serving about 625 students.
