Sacramento school district, labor union reach agreement guaranteeing retroactive pay raise
The Sacramento City Unified School District and a union representing non-instructional classified staff have reached a deal that provides wage hikes and improved working conditions for its members.
The Service Employees International Union Local 1021 — which represents custodians, bus drivers, instructional aides and food service workers — agreed to a contract that adjusts the salary schedule to address salary compaction among its lowest-paid members.
“This new contract demonstrates the District’s commitment to leveling compensation and uplifting some of our lowest-paid employees to a status that is more reflective of their immense value to the families and students we serve,” said Board President Jasjit Singh.
All union members will receive a retroactive salary raise of 2% for the 2023 academic year and 4% for the 2024 academic year. The agreement also minimizes the district’s use of outside contractors.
The district and the union will return to the bargaining table in spring to begin a new round of contract negotiations for the 2025-26 school year.
“This agreement not only addresses the critical need for competitive pay to retain and attract talented classified workers but also assists in filling vacancies as we continue to recruit and hire for essential positions needed to support the students we serve,” SEIU Chapter President Karla Faucett said. “Together, we’re building a brighter future for our schools, staff and community.”
