Elk Grove High School locker room incident prompts investigation into football team
Parents of Elk Grove High School football players received a letter from school administrators about troubling behavior in the school locker room.
“We are writing to inform you of a matter that requires our collective attention and actions. It has come to our attention that a group of student-athletes have engaged in behaviors that do not align with the standards of conduct and character we uphold at Elk Grove High School,” the Thursday letter from Principal Rudy Ortega reads.
Ortega goes on to describe the immediate measures the school is taking to “address the issue with transparency and accountability” — including increased adult supervision around the locker room and an investigation into the school’s “locker room culture” and student athlete conduct.
They also promised to promptly address any confirmed violations of school policy and to dole out consequences in line with the severity of the behavior.
The letter concludes with a call for parents to engage with their children about appropriate conduct.
“This is a critical moment for reflection, growth, and accountability, not only for the individuals involved but for our athletic program as a whole. We ask that you speak with your student-athlete about the importance of integrity, respect, and responsibility during this process. Your partnership is essential in reinforcing the values we strive to instill in our students,” the letter reads.
Ortega does not go into detail about the incident that prompted the notification and ensuing investigation, leading many local parents to speculate about what happened in the locker rooms in online Elk Grove forums.
Elk Grove Unified School District spokesperson Lisa Levasseur said that “appropriate disciplinary action has been taken with the students involved.” She did not respond to Sacramento Bee inquiries about the nature of the incident or whether any students have been removed from the team. Head coach John Heffernan did not respond to an immediate request for comment.
Levasseur confirmed that the Elk Grove Thundering Herd varsity football team would still play Friday night’s home game against Merced’s Golden Valley Cougars.
“The football team remains intact and is prepared and excited to participate in tonight’s game,” she said.
