District moves ahead with Rocklin High theater upgrade, weighs $288M bond

Rocklin news

As Rocklin Unified School District weighs a proposed $288 million school facilities bond, trustees approved a $159,000 theater seating upgrade at Rocklin High School on Wednesday night.

The project to upgrade seating at the theater at Rocklin High School was approved Wednesday evening. The upgrade, costing the district $159,042.56, is expected to begin in May and be completed by Aug. 10. The cost includes furnishing, delivering and installing the seats.

Sundeep S. Dosanjh, Rocklin Unified School District’s chief of communications and community engagement officer, said the district is evaluating a school bond measure for future modernization needs.

“The goal of a bond would be to secure state matching funds, enabling the school district to modernize and improve learning environments for future generations,” he said.

According to the district’s website, the board is considering placing a $288 million school improvement bond measure on the November 2026 ballot to fund repairs and upgrades at local schools.

“The potential measure is projected to cost approximately $60 per $100,000 of a property’s assessed value (not market), while bonds are outstanding,” the website states. “Based on current projections, it is unlikely that the current tax rates would increase as a result of the new measure.”

If approved by voters, the measure would upgrade career technical education facilities; repair or replace roofs, plumbing and sewer systems; replace heating, air conditioning and electrical systems; improve classrooms; and construct new classrooms to replace portable buildings.

The district is hosting a town hall May 28 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rocklin Unified School District Board Room, 2615 Sierra Meadows Drive, to gather community input about the potential bond measure before the board votes in June on whether to place it on the ballot.

Dosanjh said the money for the theater upgrade came from a one-time general fund resource supporting districtwide safety and facility enhancements.

“In May 2025, the Rocklin Unified School District Board of Trustees allocated $7.15 million from one-time general fund resources to support various districtwide safety and facility enhancements,” he said. “Among the projects receiving this funding is the upgrade of seating in the Rocklin High School Theater.”

Emily Masnica, the Rocklin High School theater teacher, said she looks forward to the upgrade.

We have had the original seats in the theater since 1993, and with the theater used daily as a classroom and as the performance space for all of our performing arts programs, our seats have seen wear and tear,” she said. “The new seats will be an incredible upgrade that we are beyond grateful and excited about.”
