Rocklin Unified teacher caught urinating in classroom video still employed, records show
The Granite Oaks Middle School teacher who was caught on video urinating into a container in his classroom before students arrived in February still remains employed by the school district, according to public records obtained by The Sacramento Bee.
A cellphone video obtained by The Bee showed the teacher urinating into a container positioned just outside the camera’s view. Afterward, he can be heard expressing satisfaction, saying phrases including “gosh, that’s good” and “love it” as he adjusts his clothing and carries the container away. Audio captured after he leaves the frame suggests he emptied the container in a classroom sink.
After the container is emptied, the school bell rings. Students enter the classroom about a minute later, and voices, whispers and laughter can be heard before the recording ends. Based on the video, no students appear to have been in the classroom while the teacher used the container.
Students identified the teacher as Dan Champ, an eighth-grade history teacher and associated student body adviser at Granite Oaks Middle School.
The Rocklin Unified School District said the incident did not involve other students or staff members but placed Champ on administrative leave in February, saying the behavior shown in the video was inconsistent with the district’s professional standards.
“Although we are unable to share specific details, this matter is being taken seriously and will be addressed in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and legal requirements,” the district’s communication to parents said.
Rocklin Police Capt. Chad Morris said the incident was “thoroughly documented,” but no criminal charges were filed.
“The school district is handling the matter internally, but no criminal charges have been filed,” Morris said.
Sundeep S. Dosanjh, Rocklin Unified’s chief communications and community engagement officer, said Champ remains employed by the district but declined to say whether he continues to serve in the same role at Granite Oaks Middle School.
Public records obtained by The Sacramento Bee indicate Champ remains employed as a teacher at Granite Oaks Middle School. The records show he began teaching there in January 1998 and is still an active employee.
Champ also continues to hold a valid single-subject teaching credential, according to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Questions about why the incident occurred in the classroom, what Champ’s administrative leave entailed, and if Champ returned to teaching remain unanswered, as Champ did not respond to The Bee’s request for comment.
It also remains unclear how the student knew the incident was going to occur when the video was recorded.
An eighth-grade student who previously took Champ’s class told The Bee she heard rumors at the beginning of the school year that he would urinate into a container between classes.
Her mother requested that her daughter’s identity not be disclosed to protect her privacy.
The student said she later received the video on Snapchat and was disturbed to learn the incident occurred near where she used to sit.
Champ also has ties to middle school students outside the Rocklin Unified School District through an educational travel program he operates with his wife called Champ Tours.
The company’s next educational tour of landmarks along the East Coast is scheduled for March 2027.
