Sacramento city schools ask if school year should start earlier

The Sacramento City Unified School District, which months ago nudged the start of its 2015 school year before Labor Day, wants parents and families to weigh in on whether to again move up its opening day in 2016.

The move, district officials say, would allow the district to be more competitive in teacher hiring and other planning needs.

Seven community forums are scheduled for this month. All begin at 6 p.m.

The dates are Thursday at Kit Carson Middle School, 5301 N St.; Oct. 12, McClatchy High School, 3066 Freeport Blvd.; Oct. 14, Rosemont High School, 9594 Kiefer Blvd.; Oct. 20, Burbank High School, 3500 Florin Road; Oct. 21,West Campus High School, 5022 58th St.; Oct. 28, Hollywood Park Elementary, 4915 Harte Way; and Oct. 29, Kennedy High School, 6715 Gloria Dr.

The district is also asking families to fill out an online survey on the district’s home website at www.scusd.edu.
