American River College wins honor for Veterans Resource Center

American River College won statewide recognition Friday for its Veterans Resource Center.

The Chancellor’s Student Success Award granted at a statewide meeting of community college representatives in Rancho Mirage honored the Veterans Resource Center for its role as a one-stop service center for student veterans.

The college has the sixth largest veteran population among community colleges in the state, with an enrollment of 1,300 veterans in the spring semester. The center provides counseling, tutoring, career development help, a study area, peer mentoring, referrals to community social services and more.

Two other colleges received the honor: Merced Community College was recognized for its student-faculty Study Central that promotes academic discussions, peer guidance, workshops and more. And Solano Community College in Fairfield was recognized for its Umoja Program Scholars, which is designed to help students smoothly transfer to four-year universities. The program, open to all students, focuses on serving African American students.
