Homeless warming centers to stay open in Sacramento at least through Wednesday
With overnight lows dipping into the 30s, Sacramento officials are keeping walk-up warming centers open for the homeless at least through Wednesday.
The centers are at 3615 Auburn Blvd., 700 N. Fifth St., and 1725 28th St.
The Auburn Boulevard and North Fifth Street centers, run by the city, will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The 28th Street center, the lobby of a county welfare office, will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
People who present a flyer can ride Regional Transit for free to get to all three centers, from 7 p.m. to about 10 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., a city blog post said. The flyer also allows people to ride light rail for free to get to the Watt/I-80 station, which connects to bus Route 1 for the Auburn Boulevard center.
Riders will need to inform RT drivers they are going to the centers. Riders can show the flyer on their phones through a link at 211sacramento.org or by asking for one on the buses.
The Auburn Boulevard and 28th Street centers accept pets and children, while the North Fifth Street center does not.
The city and county might keep the centers open after Wednesday, depending on the forecast, the blog post said. It’s unclear whether any walk-up warming centers will be open for Christmas and Christmas Eve.
Lows for Thursday night are currently forecast to be around 42 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
City and county officials have been opening walk-up warming centers during bouts of extreme cold and extreme heat, but do not have any 24/7 walk-up weather centers.
An unhoused man died of hypothermia near Camp Pollock last month, a week before Thanksgiving, on a night when the low was 39, but walk-up warming centers were not open. Last year eight homeless people froze to death.
