The Sacramento City Council approved increases on Tuesday for solid waste collection rates.
Rates will increase by 3 percent on July 1, and 2 percent in both 2016 and 2017. For a home with a 64-gallon garbage can, a yard waste bin and a recycling bin, the increase will add $2.41 per month to solid waste bills at the end of three years.
The city has not raised rates since 2010. City staffers said the fee hikes are needed to keep up with increases in disposal fees, employee salaries and fuel costs. The rate increases will help the city maintain a 90-day operational reserve in its solid waste collection.
