The Tsakopoulos Library Galleria and the Sacramento Room in the main branch of the Sacramento Public Library will be closed for at least five weeks beginning Saturday during a massive roof repair project that will cost the city an estimated $336,000.
The downtown library itself will remain open during construction. The work is needed to repair leaks in the Galleria roof, according to the library website.
City spokeswoman Marycon Razo said the metal roof dome above the Galleria atrium “has developed small leaks because of expansion and contraction over the years.” City crews tried to patch the leaks with “minor fixes,” Razo said, but were unable to stop the problem.
Repairing the leaks will be a major undertaking. A large crane will be used Saturday to install scaffolding across the atrium roof. To make room for the crane, the city plans to close Ninth Street in front of the library on Saturday.
