After decades of service to his country and community, longtime Auburn City Councilmember John M. “Mike” Holmes died at his home on Saturday. He was 86.

City officials did not disclose the cause of his death in Tuesday’s announcement.

Holmes retired as a U.S. Navy captain after a career that included deployments to Vietnam and Taiwan. City officials said his military service was recognized with numerous honors, including the Legion of Merit Award, the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Medal.

After his military career, Holmes was elected to the Auburn City Council in 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2022. He served as mayor in 2005 and 2008.

Mayor Kelley Davis said Holmes lived a life dedicated to serving those he cared for.

“Mike Holmes dedicated his life to service — first to our nation, and then to the Auburn community he cared so deeply about,” Davis said. “His leadership, wisdom, and commitment to preserving what makes Auburn special was integral to shaping our City. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and are grateful for the legacy he leaves behind.”

The Auburn City Council will discuss how to fill Holmes’ vacant seat at its July 13 meeting.
