Road closures scheduled for 34th annual California International Marathon

The Sunday running of the California International Marathon will mostly preclude any traffic on the course that begins at Folsom Dam and ends at the state Capitol.

Motorists should cross the course route before closures or find another route.

In past marathons, monitors occasionally allowed traffic to cross the course if there are large gaps between runners.

The finish line area around Eighth, Ninth and 10th streets and Capitol Mall will be closed from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to race organizers.

A field of 9,000 marathoners and 3,500 relay runners will participate in the 34th annual CIM. Marathoners and the first-leg relay runners begin at 7 a.m. at Folsom Dam.

The slightly downhill course is known for being a good place to run a fast time to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The CIM is put on by the Sacramento Running Association.

The road closure schedule:

1 - 5:20-7:35 a.m.: Oak Avenue

2 - 5:20-7:50 a.m.: American River Canyon Drive

5:20-7:50 a.m.: Santa Juanita and Oak avenues

3 - 6:55-8:05 a.m.: April Street and Oak Avenue

4 - 6:55-8:15 a.m.: Beech and Oak avenues

5 - 6:55-8:30 a.m.: Wachtel Way

6 - 6:55-8:45 a.m.: Fair Oaks Boulevard and Oak Avenue

7 - 6:55-9 a.m.: Woodlake Hills Drive and Fair Oaks Boulevard

6:55-9:15 a.m.: Greenback Lane

8 - 7:15-9:15 a.m.: Niessen Way and Fair Oaks Boulevard

7:15-9:30 a.m.: Madison Avenue

9 - 7:15-9:30 a.m.: Dorian Drive and Fair Oaks Boulevard

10 - 7:15-9:45 a.m.: Main Street and Fair Oaks Boulevard
