Quick work: Caltrans opens Highway 50 a day ahead of schedule at mudslide site
Drivers have a clear route over the Sierra Nevada on Highway 50 two days after a mudslide blocked a lane and caused Caltrans to restrict traffic.
Caltrans on Saturday announced that the route is open with traffic moving in both directions.
Highway 50 had been restricted since Thursday, when a mudslide damaged a section of the road at Alder Creek in between White Hall and Kyburz. Winter storms had damaged the same stretch of rural highway earlier this year.
Caltrans and emergency contractor Doug Veerkamp General Engineering removed some 50 truckloads of debris from the site to clear the road. They finished their work a day earlier than Caltrans projected.
