After wet weekend with Sierra snow, Sacramento is set for sunshine. When will rain return?
The sun’s out in Sacramento, and it’s here to stay — at least until Thursday.
Rain pelted the Sacramento region over the weekend, but had mostly cleared up as of Monday morning. Sacramento won’t see rain again until Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Downtown Sacramento received 1.53 inches of rain over the weekend, according to Cory Mueller, a forecaster and meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Other places in the region saw nearly two inches of rain, including Roseville, which received 1.69 inches, and Rancho Cordova, which got 1.97 inches.
This kind of weather isn’t uncommon for this time of year, Mueller said.
The Sierra saw some snowfall as well, Mueller said, with Squaw Valley receiving 10.6 inches of snow and the Sierra Snow Lab receiving 6.6 inches as of 4 a.m. Monday. Mueller said that snow stuck in some higher altitudes, though in lower altitudes, it didn’t “accumulate too much.”
Chain controls are in effect in some portions of Interstate 80 due to snowy conditions, according to Caltrans.
Areas north of the Sacramento Valley may get some rain showers through the week, though Mueller estimated that rainfall in the region is “going to remain light.”
Sacramento is expected to see rainy conditions Thursday night, though Mueller said the storm doesn’t look strong.
“It will be much weaker than what we saw this weekend, but there should be some light rain Thursday night,” he said.
The Sacramento region is set to see wet — and maybe snowy — weather on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Emily Heller.
“It looks like for Christmas Eve we do have some rain in the forecast, including some mountain snow,” Heller said.
As for Christmas Day, Heller said that precipitation may be coming to an end and that it “might be a little drier.”
