What was California’s favorite car in 2019? Here are major metro areas’ best sellers

Sacramento-area buyers’ top choices for car and pickup truck were clear-cut this year, with one model of each dominating the new and used vehicle markets, according to a recent report looking at millions of 2019 automobile sales.

In Sacramento and for a solid chunk of the rest of the country, the Honda Civic and the Ford F-150 reigned supreme.

Automobile trend analysis website iSeeCars.com, in a study released Tuesday, examined more than 26 million vehicle sales this year — about 17 million new, the rest used cars from model years 2014 to 2018 — and determined the most popular cars and trucks in each state, and within the nation’s 50 most populous metro areas.

The Civic ranked No. 1 and the F-150 came in second in the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto area used car market, while the F-150 beat out the Civic for the top spot in new car sales.

Rounding out the Top 5 for Sacramento’s used car marketplace this year: the Honda Accord, then the Nissan Altima and finally the Toyota Camry. For new cars, the Toyota Camry ranked No. 3, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and then the Honda Accord, according to iSeeCars.

“The Ford F-150 has been America’s undisputed best-selling new car for over 40 years, and it maintains its popularity in the used car marketplace as well,” iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly said in a statement.

Indeed, the pickup was most popular in nearly half of the top 50 metro areas. The F-150 was also the most-sold used vehicle in 32 of 50 states and the top new vehicle in 22 states — but it earned neither of those statewide distinctions in California, where the Civic held both titles.

In fact, the Civic was the most popular new vehicle and the most-bought used car in the San Diego, San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose and Los Angeles areas. Finishing out California’s metro areas, the Fresno-Visalia area was partial to the Silverado 1500 in the new car market and the Altima in the used market.

Among the study’s other findings: the Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape appeared to be America’s most popular SUVs for 2019.
