I-80 traffic stalled in Northgate as personnel extricate passenger ‘stuck’ after crash

A crash involving multiple big rigs and a smaller passenger vehicle trapped an occupant inside one of the vehicles Wednesday morning, blocking lanes of eastbound Interstate 80 near Northgate for close to two hours as fire personnel worked to extricate.

The crash was reported just after 8 a.m. along the right-hand side of eastbound I-80, just before the Norwood Avenue offramp, according to the California Highway Patrol incident log.

The incident log says the collision involved three semi trucks and a smaller passenger vehicle, and that one party was “stuck” in a vehicle that was up against a wall.

The Sacramento Fire Department tweeted a photo from the aftermath of the crash, showing a black two-door coupe, wedged between the concrete barrier and the side of a big rig. Personnel had to cut open the roof of the vehicle to extricate the occupant. The tweet said no one was injured in the incident.

Caltrans traffic cameras showed the crash along on a raised section of I-80, with at least one of the semi trucks close to the barrier in the right-side shoulder. The two right lanes and shoulder were blocked until about 10 a.m.

Before the lanes cleared, congestion on eastbound I-80 extended to the Interstate 5 interchange, traffic cameras showed.
